Shape memory metals have been developed by NASA for the space industry and used for more and more applications on Earth, e.g. there have been limited studies on the use of these materials in robotics. They make it possible to build very lightweight robots.
The Dash4 Memory Metal Actuator offers a stroke of 0.23" and over 1.75 pounds of operating force. The built-in limit switch allows safe operation over a wide voltage range (i.e. operating speed) in conjunction with the MAD-v5 (sold separately). The Dash4 is nearly an inch wide and less than 0.1" thick!
