The PhidgetMotorControl USB Single 5A allows you to control the direction, speed and acceleration of a DC motor. The motor is powered by an external power supply (9 to 28 V, DC voltage).
Based DC motors are very easy to understand, but very difficult to control precisely. By applying a voltage or quickly pulsing a voltage at the terminal of the motor, current flows through the motor and it begins to rotate. Depending on the direction of the current, the motor rotates clockwise or counterclockwise.
The PhidgetMotorControl USB Single 5A changes the rms voltage by changing the percentage of time the motor uses the full supply voltage. By rapidly changing the voltage (PWM technology), the controller becomes smaller, more efficient and cheaper.
You can automatically achieve a rough control of the actual motor speed by using the back EMF properties or current sensing. You can achieve precise control of the DC motor by using encoders. You can implement control loops through software by using the data provided by on-board digital inputs, analog inputs and encoder inputs.
The PhidgetMotorControl USB Single 5A also provides protection against overcurrent, overvoltage and overheating to ensure that the board and motor are not damaged.
