The Pololu Step-up/Step-down Voltage Regulator S7V7F5 is a switching regulator (also called SMPS or DC/DC converter) that uses a buck-boost topology. It accepts an input voltage of 2.7 V to 11.8 V and increases or decreases the voltage to a fixed 5 V output with a typical efficiency of over 90%.
This input voltage flexibility is particularly well suited for battery-powered applications where the battery voltage starts above 5 V and decreases as the battery is discharged. New battery packs and form factors can be considered without the typical limitation that the battery voltage remains above the required voltage throughout its life. For example, a 4-cell battery holder that has a 6V output with fresh alkalis but a 4.8V rated voltage with NiMH cells and a 4.0V output with partial discharge cells can now be used for a 5V circuit. In another typical scenario, a disposable 9V battery that supplies a 5V circuit can be discharged to below 3V instead of shutting down at 6V, as is the case with typical linear or step-down regulators.
In typical applications, this controller can provide about 1A continuous when the input voltage is higher than 5V (falling) and 500mA continuous when the input is lower than 5V (rising); for a more detailed characterization, see the diagrams at the end of this page. The regulator is short-circuit proof and thermal shutdown prevents damage due to overheating; the circuit board is not reverse polarity protected.
A similar regulator with an adjustable output output must be equipped with the S7V8A voltage regulator.
Füfor a higher current alternative, the S911VF5 is recommended, which can provide a typical maximum continuous current of 1.5 A for input voltages close to 5 V and offers a wider input voltage range from 2 V to 16 V, all in a smaller package. The S911VF5 is part of a larger S911Fx family of step-up/step-down regulators that includes versions with finely adjustable outputs and adjustable low-voltage shutdowns.
